ABOUT

© Gianfranco Gallucci

Lucia Friedrich, born in France, 1994, is a German-Croatian painter whose research focuses on the individual, the body, and collective dynamics. Her work has been exhibited in the US, at the Kunsthalle Wien MQ in Austria, with UNESCO in Portugal, and recently in Italy, where she opened her first solo show at Palazzo Roberti in Mola di Bari (2024) and recently at Spazio Murat, Bari, in collaboration with Gianfranco Gallucci, debuting their mutual project about the disquiet for the first time in Italy.

After a promising international debut, she withdrew from public life for several years due to a serious illness. In 2022, she won the Red Carpet Art Award in Vienna with a series of portraits created during her hospital stay, where she was also a patient. This marked a turning point in her practice, confronting the body’s intimacy as both a site of vulnerability and resilience.

She has lived and worked across various European countries, including Portugal, where she exhibited with Gianfranco Gallucci in the show Desassossego (UNESCO, Leiria, 2023) before settling in Puglia, where she now lives and works.

In her work, she focuses on the human experience, which often incorporates deep research through the humanistic disciplines, where she often hides references in her work. Ambiguities are a necessary structural element, manifesting both in intimate portraits, where the gaze penetrates flesh and nudity and in collective studies that explore emotional extremes like tenderness and violence. Her painting constantly interrogates the gray zones of perception, what destabilizes, unsettles, and ultimately makes us human.
